Translation

tread wear indicator, TWI

A raised bar in the bottom of a main groove of the tyre, often marked TWI on the sidewall. It is a measuring point, not tread: the legal tread depth is measured without counting the wear indicators (art. 5.2.27). If the indicator is level with the tread surface, the groove is used up at that spot. The Regeling voertuigen also uses the indicators to detect regrooving: if they have been cut away, the tyre has been regrooved and fails.
