de zomerbanden

ZOH-mer-ban-denIPA [ˈzoːmərbɑndə(n)]

Translation

summer tyres

Tyres with a harder rubber compound and wider grooves, made for warm and wet asphalt. Below roughly 7 degrees that rubber hardens and loses grip, exactly when the road is cold and wet. In the Netherlands you may drive on them all year; the legal floor is the same for every tyre: the main grooves must keep at least 1.6 mm of tread around the whole circumference (Regeling voertuigen, art. 5.2.27). Deep wide grooves carry water away and postpone aquaplaning.
