Translation
winter tyres
Tyres with a softer rubber compound and a finer siped tread, marked M+S or with the mountain and snowflake symbol. Below roughly 7 degrees they stay supple where summer rubber hardens, and that shortens braking on cold, wet asphalt. The Netherlands has no winter tyre requirement; legally only this counts, that the tread of the main grooves is at least 1.6 mm around the whole circumference (Regeling voertuigen, art. 5.2.27). Other countries may well require them.
