de schemering

SKHAY-me-ringIPA [ˈsxeːmərɪŋ]

Translation

twilight, dusk

The transition between day and night. Legally, night is the period between sunset and sunrise (art. 1), so the twilight before sunset still counts as day. Dipped beam is then compulsory only when visibility is seriously impaired (art. 32). In practice that is a trap: in twilight you still see well enough yourself, while another road user can barely make you out. Lights on is not about seeing, but about being seen.
