Level crossings — how to behave
| What the rule is | Where it goes wrong | |
|---|---|---|
| When you may enter the crossing | Art. 15a(1): only if you can proceed IMMEDIATELY and can clear the crossing completely. Two conditions at once, and both concern the far side. | Looking only at the barriers. If traffic is queued beyond the crossing you may not enter — even with everything open and clear. |
| Priority for rail | Art. 15a(2): road users give way to a rail vehicle and keep the crossing completely clear while doing so. | Waiting just past the crossing. You must keep it CLEAR, not partly occupied — a train will not brake for you. |
| The crossing lights | Art. 71: flashing white means “no train approaching”, flashing red means stop. There is no green here. | Reading flashing white as “broken”. It is a valid signal. And flashing red applies even while the barriers are still up. |
| Stopping on the crossing | Forbidden: art. 23(1)(a) names the crossing in the same breath as the junction. Not just parking — stopping. | Thinking “waiting a moment” is not stopping. Any coming to a standstill counts, however brief. |
The law itself
