A part of the carriageway marked with oblique stripes (art. 1). Drivers may not use hatched areas (art. 77(1)) — not even to slip in or to skirt a queue. The area separates traffic streams and keeps the space clear. The only exception is following a rush-hour lane past a divergence or merge (art. 77(2)).
