Maximum speed
What it means
From this sign you may not drive faster than the number shown. The sign replaces the default speed that would apply without it.
What it requires of you
The sign can lower the speed but cannot raise it above the special maximum for your vehicle. If it shows 100 and you drive a truck, 80 still applies — art. 63b provides that the lowest indicated speed counts.
Where it stands
At the start of the stretch to which the speed applies, and repeated after junctions. For zones the word "zone" appears above it.
How far it applies
Applies until sign A2, until a further A1 with a different figure, or until the end of the road. With a zone sign, until the matching end sign.

The sign applies to everyone who passes it, but each vehicle also keeps its own special maximum.
Do not confuse it with
- A04
A1 is round with a red rim and binding; A4 is blue and square and is only advisory.

«Wanneer verkeerstekens die een maximumsnelheid aanduiden een hogere snelheid aangeven dan: a. de in de artikelen 20, onderdeel b, 21, onderdeel b, 22 en 22a vastgestelde maximumsnelheden, of b. de ingevolge een ministeriële regeling krachtens artikel 86a geldende maximumsnelheid, of c. de in artikel 45 aangegeven snelheid, geldt de laagste aangegeven snelheid.»
