A movable boom closing off the road, best known at a level crossing. Sign J10 announces a level crossing with barriers, sign J11 one without barriers; that second case is the riskier one, because nothing physically holds you back. Half barriers close off only your own direction, leaving the other half of the road clear — you may not drive round them. At a level crossing the Saint Andrew cross and the lights of art. 69 apply as well.
