route number

The number under which a road is known in the direction signing, found on the signs of chapter K of annex 1. Sign K1 carries the motorway route number, sign K2 that of the non-motorway and sign K4 the European through routes as well. The Netherlands runs three series side by side: A numbers for motorways, N numbers for the other through roads and E numbers for European routes, where one road may carry several numbers. The number says nothing about the permitted speed; that follows from the sign and from art. 21 and art. 22.
