Translation
clutch
The mechanism that disconnects the engine from the wheels, worked with the left pedal. You use it to move off, to change gear and to come to a stop, and otherwise your foot belongs beside it: riding along half depressed wears the plate. Moving off on a slope is done with the handbrake as well, so the car does not roll back. Coasting with the clutch down or in neutral takes away engine braking, whereas coasting in gear costs no fuel on a modern engine. Note that in the Regeling voertuigen the same word also names the towbar coupling, where it concerns the vertical load under the coupling (art. 5.18.7).
