de wegenbelasting
VAY-khen-be-las-tingIPA [ˈʋeːɣə(n)bəlɑstɪŋ]
Translation
road tax
The tax you pay because a vehicle is registered in your name. It hangs on the registration, not on driving: a car standing still costs tax too as long as the registration is in your name. Whoever suspends the registration with the RDW is freed of road tax, insurance duty and MOT for the duration of the suspension, but may not then put the vehicle on a public road. The rate depends among other things on weight, fuel and province.
