White ice crystals that settle in frost on windows, mirrors and road surface. Unlike glaze ice you see hoarfrost at once, but it does betray that the road surface itself is at or below zero; bridges, flyovers and shaded stretches freeze first. Before setting off you scrape all windows clear, not one peephole: the driver must have sufficient view forward and sideways through the windscreen and the front side windows (Regeling voertuigen, art. 5.18.4), and the car should have a properly working de-icing and demisting installation (art. 5.2.44).
