Translation
quay, quayside
The paved bank along water where ships can moor, and thus a road with open water directly beside the carriageway. Annex 1 gives sign J26 the description quay or river bank: a warning sign, not a prohibition. There is usually no crash barrier and no verge to swerve onto, so the safety margin is the width of the carriageway itself.
