competent authority

The authority referred to in article 18 of the Wegenverkeerswet 1994 (art. 1). It is the body that takes traffic decisions and has the signs placed, and that under art. 87 may grant exemption from a range of provisions and traffic signs. A sign is therefore never there by chance: a decision of the competent authority lies behind it.
