anti-lock braking system
Anti-lock braking: it keeps the wheels turning under hard braking so you can still steer. The pedal then pulsates — that is the system, not a fault, and you keep it pressed. ABS does not always shorten the braking distance; on gravel or loose sand it can be longer.
