Dashboard warning lights

What the law says about itConsequence at the MOTWhere it goes wrong
ABS lightThe ABS warning device may not indicate a defect — for cars first used after 31 December 2017.A lit ABS light means a fail for such a car.Thinking it merely means “ABS off” and the rest works normally. The brakes work, but under hard braking the wheels lock and the car can no longer be steered.
ESC light (stability control)The stability-control warning device may not indicate a defect — same date limit: first used after 31 December 2017.Fail. The requirement is worded exactly as for ABS and the airbag.Mistaking a flashing ESC light while driving for a fault. Flashing means the system is intervening right now; staying lit means it is off.
Airbag lightThe airbag warning device may not indicate a defect — cars first used after 31 December 2017.Fail.Postponing it because “the airbag is only needed in a crash anyway”. Exactly so: you find out about the fault at the moment when finding out is too late.
Electronic braking systemA separate provision alongside ABS: the electronic braking system warning device may not indicate a defect.Fail; it is paragraph 12 of the same article as ABS (paragraph 11).Treating ABS and the electronic braking system as the same thing. The law names them in two separate paragraphs, so they are two requirements, not one.
How the light is checkedAn optical OR acoustic signal AFTER starting the engine counts as “not met”. In case of doubt a road test follows. So delivering the car with the engine already running does not help: the inspector starts it again himself.Mistaking the self-test for a fault. When you switch on the ignition every light comes on briefly — that is normal. What matters is what stays lit AFTER starting.
Brake fluid levelThe reservoirs of the hydraulic brake system must contain sufficient brake fluid. The level may not be below the minimum mark.Below the minimum is a fail; visual check of the reservoir.Topping up and driving on. Brake fluid does not vanish by itself: a falling level means a leak or worn pads, and topping up hides both.
Engine fault and catalystFor cars first used after 31 December 1992 with a catalyst and lambda sensor the emission control system must WORK PROPERLY — not merely be present.A poorly working emission control system is a fail, even if the car drives normally.Thinking an engine fault light is “only about the environment”. The lambda sensor controls the mixture; if it fails, consumption rises and the catalyst dies — an expensive chain.
And in an older car?The four warning-device requirements apply only from 1 January 2018. For older cars art. 5.1.1(1) remains: driving is forbidden if the vehicle is in insufficient technical condition. No automatic fail on the light itself, but on what the light warns about, if that shows up at the inspection.Concluding from “does not apply to my car” that the light may be ignored. Art. 5.1.1 is addressed to the DRIVER too, not only to the inspection.
