Warning and information: the letters J, G, H

345 questions — more than any other group. Many signs, but almost no duties: they forbid nothing and permit nothing, they tell you something. Hence the core question of the topic: what you MUST do on seeing such a sign.

The triangle forbids nothing

J-signs warn: [J01](/en/signs/J01) poor surface, [J02](/en/signs/J02) and [J03](/en/signs/J03) sharp bend, [J08](/en/signs/J08) dangerous junction, [J16](/en/signs/J16) road works, [J20](/en/signs/J20) slippery, [J24](/en/signs/J24) cyclists and mopeds, [J27](/en/signs/J27) large game.

They name no figures. The duty comes from art. 19: be able to stop within the stretch you can see and that is clear. After a triangle, then, it is not the sign that chooses your speed but visibility and surface.

The rectangle announces a regime

G-signs change not behaviour at one point but the rules over a whole stretch: [G01](/en/signs/G01) start of the motorway, [G03](/en/signs/G03) start of the autoweg, [G05](/en/signs/G05) [erf](/en/glossary/erf), [G11](/en/signs/G11) compulsory cycle path, [G07](/en/signs/G07) footpath.

Each has an end sign: [G02](/en/signs/G02), [G04](/en/signs/G04), [G06](/en/signs/G06), [G12](/en/signs/G12). The regime holds until then, not until the junction — and that is the great difference from prohibition signs.

The built-up area: a sign that changes a number

[H01](/en/signs/H01) begins the [built-up area](/en/glossary/bebouwde-kom), [H02](/en/signs/H02) ends it. The speed is written on neither: it follows from the fact itself, and you have to know it by heart.

Reserved lanes: the sign says whose the lane is

[G11](/en/signs/G11) obliges cyclists to use the path and forbids them the carriageway beside it. Similar signs assign lanes to buses, trams and lorries — that is group F, but you read them the same way: first for whom, then until which sign.

What to remember

The shape answers almost everything. A triangle is a warning, and the duty comes from art. 19, not from the sign. A rectangle is the regime of the road, and it holds until its matching end sign. Look not for “what is forbidden” but for “what applies now”.
