Prohibition signs: the letter C

212 questions — the second heaviest group. Memorising twenty pictures looks like a week's work, but the group is built logically: almost every sign answers the question “who exactly may not”.

Four ways of saying “no”

The group splits by WHAT the sign restricts:

  1. Direction. [C01](/en/signs/C01) closes the road in both directions,

[C02](/en/signs/C02) only from this side, [C03](/en/signs/C03) states that the road is one-way.

  1. Type of vehicle. [C07](/en/signs/C07) lorries, [C11](/en/signs/C11)

motorcycles, [C13](/en/signs/C13) mopeds, [C15](/en/signs/C15) bicycles and mopeds, [C16](/en/signs/C16) pedestrians.

  1. Size and weight. [C17](/en/signs/C17) length, [C18](/en/signs/C18)

width, [C19](/en/signs/C19) height, [C20](/en/signs/C20) axle load, [C21](/en/signs/C21) total mass.

  1. Load. [C22](/en/signs/C22) — certain dangerous goods.

Environmental zone: a ban on emissions, not on type

[C22e](/en/signs/C22e) closes a [zone](/en/glossary/milieuzone) to vehicles that fall short of its requirements. It is the only sign in the group where the ban depends not on what you are but on what you emit.

The zone runs to its end sign, not to the next junction — and that is where it differs from an ordinary prohibition.

Speed is a prohibition too

The maximum-speed sign applies from where it stands until the end sign, the end of the zone, or the start of another speed. A separate case is the speed zone: it sets one figure for every street inside it, not for one street.

Where the prohibition ends

A prohibition does not last for ever, and that is an exam question in its own right. It ends at the end sign, at [F08](/en/signs/F08) (“end of all prohibitions indicated by signs”) or at the end of the zone. The commonest mistake is thinking that the next junction lifts a prohibition.

What to remember

A round sign with a red rim is a prohibition. Then one question: who may not — everyone, a type of vehicle, a size, or a load. And a second: where that prohibition ends.
