The prohibition on proceeding. You stop before the stop line, or before the light itself if there is none. Unlike in many countries there is no general exception allowing a right turn on red: that is permitted only where a separate sign or arrow says so. If a traffic controller directs otherwise, the controller overrides the light (art. 84).
