An ultrasonic sensor that beeps when something stands close to the bumper. It is help, not a substitute: the driver must have sufficient view of the road beside and behind him using the prescribed mirrors or a camera-monitor system (Regeling voertuigen, art. 5.18.4). Reversing also remains a special manoeuvre, in which you must let all other traffic go first (art. 54). Thin posts, bicycles and a child playing below bumper height often go unheard by the sensor.
